Landscapes Within: Work by Carola Penn

Carola Penn, Oregon Grape, 2007, Acrylic on Wood

From May 31 to June 16, 2024, X Gallery will host a show of work by the artist Carola Penn (1945–2019). Join us for the opening reception on Friday, May 31 from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Over her fifty year career as an artist, Carola Penn painted both personal and physical landscapes in Portland, Oregon. Her practice revolved around thick textures, dense detail, and emotional palettes with subject matter ranging from concentrated abstraction to immersive forest scenes. Her depiction of both the built and natural environments addressed the shifting architectures of the soul, a topic she worked with directly in a series of paintings called Second Childhood. The show will feature forest pieces, urban landscapes, and works from Second Childhood.
